Weber inducted into Minnesota State
Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame

by Jay Schneider
LIFE/Enterprise Managing Editor

ELYSIAN - For years he has been the voice of auctions throughout the Lake Region Area.

Long-time Elysian resident, Herb Weber, has a voice which has become synonymous with auctioneering and volunteering to announce many different civic events.

His dedication and strong leadership within the auction industry have been acknowledged, much to the surprise of Weber.

Weber was inducted into the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame during the annual MSAA conference held Jan. 24-26 at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott in Bloomington.

Weber said he was completely surprised when they announced his name and his entire family came out to congratulate him last week. He said he was very honored to be selected by his peers into this elite Hall of Fame. There are only 51 members over the course of the 21 years of its existence.

The Hall of Fame was created in 1987 to honor individuals who have demonstrated honesty, high ethical standards, a willingness to share with others, and high standing in his or her community and the Minnesota State Auctioneers and made significant contributions to the auction profession.

Weber, and long-time auctioneer Frank Imholte of St. Cloud were selected by current Hall of Fame members.
Herb's brother Duane made the induction speech and friends Eugene Edwards (ringman for Weber) and Steve Fausch of Fairmont (auctioneer) nominated him.

Weber has been a member of the MSAA for 25 years and is a past director and seminar provider during their annual conferences.

He graduated from Iowa College of Auctioneering in Mason City in 1982 and has been licensed ever since.

"He has promoted the auction profession through seminars in schools, nursing homes, civic organizations, as well as doing fundraisers for churches, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Waterfowl, Turkey, and Elk Federations, Le Sueur County Trails as well as charitable organizations throughout southern Minnesota," Duane said during the induction ceremony. "He has given unselfishly to his community, from city councilman in the 1970s to lector, usher and trustee at St. Andrew's Catholic Church."

Weber has also been a Legionaire for 34 years, is a retired fireman with 20 years of service, was a Little League baseball coach for more than a decade and works closely with all Elysian Legion functions.

In his nomination form, Eugene Edwards had some nice words for the inductee.

"I have helped Herb with auctions for over 10 years," Edwards said. "His organizational skills are to be admired and he adapts to whatever the situation. Herb is a good person to work for. He will not ask anyone to do anything that he wouldn't do himself."

"Mr. Weber has always served the best interests of his clients and his customers at all times," Steve Fausch said in his nomation form. "Important fundraisers, school or church functions and benefit auctions, you could always count on Herb Weber to donate his services to help."

"If you worked with set-up of auctions, hauling, clean-up, sorting, displaying of items or any other capacity, you were treated in a professional manner with respect and honesty," Fausch said. "Nancy, Herb's wife, was also a great asset to the firm in the clerking and cashiering of auctions. She complimented the teamwork in a very important way."

For more than 40 years, Weber has been an Independent Insurance Agent, owning his own agency until 2003.

Herb is now semi-retired, but still manages to do a few auctions every year.

Executive Vice President Emeritus of the MSAA, Lowell Gilbertson added this note:

"Herb is a great asset to the Minnesota State Auctioneers Association," he said. "We are proud to have him in the Hall of Fame."

yourself and our auction staff sell your property for
THE BEST POSSIBLE PRICE

reddot.gif (103 bytes) INEXPENSIVE WAYS TO INCREASE SALABILITY: Clean all dirty surfaces, motors and leaks as well as interiors. Clean and wax the item if at all possible.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) TO PAINT OR NOT TO PAINT: Only items that are in desperate need should be considered, unless in heavy equipment line.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) EQUIPMENT JEWELRY: Remove nonfunctional haywire, rope and other unnecessary items for equipment or furniture.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) MINOR REPAIRS: Remove anything obviously worn and if in doubt, ask auctioneer.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) ANTIQUES: Usually leave as is ... other than clean up of dirt or residue or ask auctioneer first. You could reduce value. Never paint or refinish!

reddot.gif (103 bytes) DECALS & SEAT CUSHIONS: Replace unreadable decals. Reupholstery of seats and cushions or replacement is encouraged on machinery but questionable on some furniture.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) FUEL & OIL LEVELS: Serious buyers always check oil level and color. Suggest changing and fill. Have adequate fuel for warm up and demonstration purposes... and why not extra 5 or 10 gallons ... the new owner is probably paying a good price for it and would like to drive it home.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) STARTING PROBLEMS: Avoid them by having all batteries fully charged or replaced.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) MAKESHIFT PINS/BOLTS/WELDED PARTS: Bent nails and bent bolts may hold, as will welded parts, but if minimal cost, put proper pins and parts on.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) SMALL ARTICLES PACKAGING: Tools, parts and miscellaneous taped together in bundles of $5.00 to $10.00 value brings better dollars and quicker bids.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) A CLEAN YARD: Creates a better buyer atmosphere and buyer feels well cared for items to be sold.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) WEBER AUCTION SERVICE IS ALSO QUALIFIED FOR: Personal Property Appraisals of Estates, Business Liquidations as well as Divorce Settlements. We Purchase Entire Personal Properties and Sell On Site or Move To Another. We Sell Individual or Blocks of Real Estate in co-operation with Realtors or Attorneys for Earnest Money and Closings.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) MOST IMPORTANTLY OF ALL: Weber Auction Service is a Member of the Minnesota Auctioneers Assn. and abiding by its Professional Ethical Standards and Educational Needs for the benefit of Buyers and Sellers. We also subscribe to Most Area Auction Trade Journals.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) HOUSEHOLD ITEMS: Furniture should be clean and in good repair, appliances too! Linens, drapes, bedding should be clean, packaged and size labeled with number of items therein.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) LIVESTOCK: Good records of production, sire and gestations a must.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) ADVERTISING DEADLINES: Proper advertising is half the sale. Future sale dates months in advance, if possible. Auctioneers can spread the word at other sales. REMEMBER: Early Listings Assure PRIME SALE DATES... Call early, it really pays!

reddot.gif (103 bytes) EQUIPMENT/PROPERTY LINE UP: Straight lines and spaced 5 or 6 feet apart on machinery with wing type equipment dropped in field position. If delivering to auction house, deliver early, late deliveries cost you money!

reddot.gif (103 bytes) WARM UPS AND DEMONSTRATIONS: Warm up at least 1/2 hour of sale. Make sure all harvest equipment has been turned over enough to remove dust, chaff, nests, mice, etc., prior to sale date. Idle items gently!

reddot.gif (103 bytes) OWNER'S MANUALS: Do not leave with items. Leave with clerk or cashier so proper owner gets them.

reddot.gif (103 bytes) PRIVATE OFFER BEFORE THE AUCTION, PIECEMEAL OR GARAGE SALE: Sometimes you get a good offer prior to Auction Date. REASON: Offeror thinks it will sell too high at auction. Why take one man's offer when you have everyone's at auction. DON'T CHANCE IT!

reddot.gif (103 bytes) THE WAY TO A PERSON'S HEART: Yes, through his stomach. Ask the caterer or concession owner if he can do something a little different. The Customers (not to mention Auctioneers) like a little variety. Soup, Donuts, Chili, Stew, Hamburgers, Popcorn, Hot Chocolate, Sweet Rolls, etc. We have Concessions Service Available too!!!
