Hillcrest shot 66% (27/41) from the field, making 55% (5/9) of their 3-pointers and nearly 69% (22/32) of their two-point attempts, as they captured the South sub-section 6A boys basketball title with a 70-55 victory over Wheaton/Herman-Norcross on Saturday night at the University of Minnesota-Morris.

“I was so pleased again to see how hard our guys played throughout the game,” stated Head Coach Gregg Preston.  “Great effort, unselfishness, and teamwork have defined this team more and more each week that the season has progressed.  The second half tonight we ran the floor very well, hit the open man with some very good passing, and finished our shots well for 42 second half points.”

Cody Aasness continued his outstanding scoring week as he led the Comets with 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, hitting 3-of-5 from outside the arc.  Jared Schultz was 6-for-9 from the field and contributed 14 points.  Joey Battillo made 4-of-7 shots and Josh Forland was 5-for-7, as both players scored 10 points in the game.

“Josh gave us a big boost with all ten of his points coming in the second half,” noted Preston.  “Cody, Joey and Jared played very well again as a group at the guard spot.  Cody followed up his 31 point night against Brandon/Evansville by pouring in 25 and shooting the ball very well, Joey added 4 points and 4 steals and is doing a good job of facilitating the offense from the off guard. He is making good decisions by his cuts and passes to get good looks for our shooters in the offense.  Jared has played extremely well in all aspects of his game.  He sets our offense, makes most of our tempo decisions, and has been in double figures most games.  Andrew Hohncke has also become one of our better defenders and gave us some very important minutes tonight.”

Tim Erickson led the rebounding effort for the Comets with 9 rebounds and added 4 assists.  Forland had 3 assists and a pair of steals.

Luke Schmitz led the Warriors with 16 points and Jay Nelson was also in double digits with ten points.  Jesse Grimes chipped in eight points and sophomore Paul Krenz added 8 points off the bench, including a pair of treys.

“Schmitz is very difficult to defend because he can play in the post and on the perimeter,” concluded Coach Preston.

Hillcrest (21-6) will now face Norman County East for the Section 6A championship on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Concordia College in Moorhead
